Mystery Headstones

We have found many fascinating stories in the North Warren cemetery but also more than a few mysteries.

So we thought we’d ask for some help and see if we can help find some pieces of your family history jigsaw.

The headstone below is, we believe, Francis Ledgar, who died in 1850. We aren’t 100 per cent sure about the spelling of his surname, because the writing on the headstone has worn away.

Along with Mary Anne (1866) and Solomon (1860)

Are they your ancestors? We are keen to find out more about them.

And also about the emblem on the gravestone. We believe it represents a Freemason. That would suggest that Francis, and possibly Solomon, were Freemasons.

This headstone is for Ann Shepherd who was born in Gainsborough on April 5th 1806. She died in Hull on January 7th 1871.

Buried with her is John Shepherd, described as a ‘master mariner’, he died on October 5th 1854.

The headstone describes him as ‘one of the pilots on board the French war steamer ‘ Stromboli’  during the Crimean War in 1854. He was interred in Bow Cemetery, London.’
